Preface. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into the most destructive and bloody war in human history. That attack also ended America's socalled "isolationism." The United States played a massive role in helping to defeat the Axis Powers in World War II. Lindbergh had called "an independent destiny for America." In that sense Pearl Harbor was a watershed in the history of American foreign affairs. There was no turning back. Before Pearl Harbor, however, the American people and their leaders had earnestly debated alternative courses for the United States in world affairs. ...
Cole Wayne Stanley - Roosevelt and the isolationists, 1932-45urn:md5:92ea18bf6482d764480616d0c60297b72021-04-22T22:38:00+01:002021-04-22T21:48:36+01:00balderCole Wayne StanleyEnglandSecond World War

Preface. For more than 140 years after the Declaration of Independence in 1776, no United States military forces fought in Europe. Similarly, for nearly a century and one-half after its alliance with France ended at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the United States avoided what Thomas Jefferson called “entangling alliances.” ...
Cole Wayne Stanley - America firsturn:md5:1d0ca43c265f09ee775f62312112cbd82013-05-16T00:57:00+01:002021-04-22T22:04:20+01:00balderCole Wayne StanleyAmericaSecond World War

Preface. "OUR PRINCIPLES were right. Had they been followed war could have been avoided/' So ran the final statement of the America First Committee issued in December, 1941, after the official entry of the United States into World War II. Organized to keep the United States out of the Euro pean war, the America First Committee failed completely to achieve its primary objective. The organization was not even able to defeat any major Administration "short-of-war" proposal actually put to the test in Congress. ...
