This work grew from a speech I gave on "Lincoln as Progenitor" of the twentieth-century American state at the Mises Institute's fifteenth-anniversary conference in Atlanta in November 1997. I would like to thank Lew Rockwell, Jeff Tucker, and the staff of the Institute for providing me with a forum for discussing these ideas and for publishing some of my earlier work. I would also like to thank Robert Higgs, editor of The Independent Review, published by the Independent Institute of Oakland, California, for publishing my essay, "The Great Centralizer: Abraham Lincoln and the War between the States," in the July 1988 issue of the Review. The advice of two anonymous peer reviewers was also very helpful. This essay formed the backbone of the present book. Former Prima Publishing acquisitions editor Steven Martin approached me about writing the book, and I thank him for doing so. I also gratefully acknowledge the financial support for my research provided by the Earhart Foundation and the Sellinger School of Business and Management at Loyola College. ...
