A few preliminary observations in regard to the aim and method of this work may be useful to the reader. He will do well to begin by persuading himself, with Montaigne, that the "hinges of custom" are not always the " hinges of reason," and still less those of reality in all times and places. He will do better still to steep himself in the spirit of scientific evolution, and to bear in mind that incessant change is the law of the social, quite as much as of the physical and organic world, and that the most splendid blossoms have sprung from very humble germs. This is the supreme truth of science, and it is only when such a point of view has become quite familiar to us that we shall be neither troubled nor disconcerted by the sociological history of humanity; and however shocking or unnatural certain customs may appear, we shall guard ourselves against any feeling of indignation at them, and more especially against a thoughtless refusal to give credence to them, simply because they run counter to our own usages and morality. ...
Letourneau Charles - Sociology based upon ethnographyurn:md5:dd08cab922d611760e752b2cfc20b8592012-12-09T14:51:00+00:002012-12-09T15:05:52+00:00balderLetourneau CharlesEthnographyEugenicsSociology

Social Science has never been so much talked about as in our own times. We all know now that the life of human societies, like everything else, is governed by rules, by laws, and may
therefore become a question of science. ...
Letourneau Charles - Property : its origin and developmenturn:md5:26c24d50ce6bc26fc670c61629b28d7f2012-12-09T14:47:00+00:002012-12-09T14:52:15+00:00balderLetourneau CharlesEthnographySociology

My inspiration for this book, as for earlier volumes, has been drawn from that fruitful method which alone, I believe, can throw light upon sociological origins : I speak of the ethnographic method, which consists in looking upon existing inferior races as living representatives of our primitive ancestors. ...
Letourneau Charles - Biologyurn:md5:7ab245fbcca5330e539d3172960a7a082012-12-09T14:45:00+00:002012-12-09T14:45:00+00:00balderLetourneau CharlesBiology

The word Biology, which seems to have been employed for the first time by Treviranus, is far from bearing in the scientific vocabulary a completely settled import. It may not be unprofitable to determine the sense of the word. Etymologically it signifies literally " science of life," and embraces everything relating, intimately or remotely, to the study of organised beings ; that is to say, a whole group of sciences, among which is comprehended Anthropology, for instance. ...
