Introduction. The quarter century that has passed since the ending of World War II has dimmed our recollection, which is reason enough for us to be interested in reading a unique record of that terrible time. But the years have also lessened our sense of certitude. The past is always compromised by the present: many of the assurances of long ago, on re-examination, turn into questions and speculations. Both the exercise of memory and the writing of history tend to make it so, however different they are in resource. The historian will attempt to read the whole record of the past so far as he is able, but since he cannot write the whole record, he will select those events and circumstances that accommodate his thesis or his bias or his style or whatever. Those selected items of occurrence become, as Max Weber concluded, the facts of history. So, too, in writing of the moment, as in a diary or journal, an act of selection takes place. One must decide what was significant in the course of a day before he can keep a reasonably short record of its passing. Yet the journal becomes, in the hands of a serious and candid person, an exceptional means by which events can be depicted literally, which is to say depicted with both accuracy of account and a consistency of view. This one recognizes, casting back, in the journals of John Wesley, of Thoreau, and of General Charles (“Chinese”) Gordon, among a few others. It may be seen, now, in the wartime journals of Charles A. Lindbergh, which are here published twenty-five years after the last of the entries was written. General Lindbergh undertook to keep these journals in November of 1937 because, as he says, he recognized the portent of the time and realized, too, that he was fortunately able to speak to leaders and representatives of the world’s large military powers. ...
Lindbergh Charles Augustus - Aviation, geography, and raceurn:md5:2c87accd20529b48079e4342c10d1e102016-06-20T20:04:00+01:002016-06-20T19:11:47+01:00balderLindbergh Charles AugustusConspirationMédecineRacesUnited States

Aviation has struck a delicately balanced world, a world where stability was already giving way to the pressure of new dynamic forces, a world dominated by a mechanical, materialist, Western European civilization. Aviation is a product of that civilization, borne on the crest of its outlook. Typical also of its strength and its weakness, its vanity and its self-destruction -men flung upward in the face of God, another Icarus to dominate the sky, and in turn, to be dominated by it; for eventually the laws of nature determine the success of human effort and measure the value of human inventions in that divinely complicated, mathematically unpredictable, development of life at which Science has given the name of Evolution. Aviation seems almost a gift from heaven to those Western nations who were already the leaders of their era, strengthening their leadership, their confidence, their dominance over other peoples. It is a tool specially shaped for Western hands, a scientific art which others only copy in a mediocre fashion, another barrier between the teeming millions of Asia and the Grecian inheritance of Europe -one of those priceless possessions which permit the White race to live at all in a pressing sea of Yellow, Black, and Brown. But aviation, using it symbolically as well as in its own right, brings two great dangers, one peculiar to our modern civilization, the other older than history. Since aviation is dependent on the intricate organization of life and industry, it carries with it the environmental danger of a people too far separated from the soil and from the sea - the danger of that physical decline which so often goes with a high intellectual development, of that spiritual decline which seems invariably to accompany an industrial life, of that racial decline which follows physical and spiritual mediocrity. ...
Lindbergh Charles Augustus - Your country at warurn:md5:4884628d5385556be372e54157e952712016-03-01T04:43:00+00:002016-03-01T04:46:13+00:00balderLindbergh Charles AugustusIsraëlJewUnited States

Introduction. On a spring day in 1918 several government agents entered a printshop at Washington, D. C., where the original edition of this book was being printed. “Destroy all the Lindbergh plates in your plant,” they told the head of the institution. He was forced to comply. The hysteria of war-time brooked no delays. Not only were the plates of this book “Why Is Your Country at War ?“ destroyed, but also the plates of Congressman Lindbergh’s book “Banking and Currency,” written in 1913 and attacking the big bankers and Federal Reserve Law. So was the pat painstaking effort of months wiped out. Only a few hundred copies of this book had been printed, and they were sent to Minnesota for use in Congressman Lindbergh’s campaign for the governorship of that state. In 1923 Dorrance & Company issued Congressman Lindbergh’s “The Economic Pinch,” long out of print, as are his other writings, so that the present volume is the only one of Lindbergh’s books available to the American reading public today. Lindbergh transferred the copyright to me late in 1923, when I was associated with him in the practice of law at Minneapolis. We intended to use the book in his 1924 campaign for governor, but death took him on May 24, 1924, and the project was halted. ...
Lindbergh Charles Augustus - Lindbergh on the Federal Reserveurn:md5:bb5f655c4df7af480b7f508b1a59ec292015-05-23T23:33:00+01:002015-05-23T23:50:19+01:00balderLindbergh Charles Augustus911EconomyJewUnited StatesUnited States

The economic pinch. A key to the good things. There's a key to the good things of the world. We all have the key. That key is the mind. It is thought that opens the way to all things. It is our failure to give a little honest thought to direct our actions that compels most of us to struggle with the hardships of the world. We are too much under the influence of others -just a few-some of whom we are taught to worship, while still others whom we seldom even know control the things that control us. As soon as we free ourselves from the domination of leaders-stop worshiping the selfappointed directors of our affairs, and instead look to the cause of things and have a mind on what action should be taken, just so soon shall we be freed from the fetters that now bind us to trouble. Then and then only infinite. good as well u prosperity shall belong to all of us. To waste our time in praising a few persona who pretend they do so .mueh, but do nothing, on the other hand belittling other people beea. use they have not done enough for us, is an admission of our own failure. It is time that the people who do the useful things stand out in the world for positive action in their own eommon interest, instead of longer allowing themselves to beeome the victims of false leadership. ...
Lindbergh Charles Augustus - Why is your country at war and what happens to you after the war and related subjectsurn:md5:d4c9b803812eadb0fd6bb6cd7d9a5f592015-05-23T23:00:00+01:002015-05-24T00:10:17+01:00balderLindbergh Charles AugustusFirst World WarJewUnited States

Introductory. All that I ask of readers of this book is that they give it hospitable consideration. We of this particular time - now - have the most important economic problems that were ever actively presented to be solved. To a greater extent than ever before, the world presents the failure in some respects of the existing civilization. Failure must be acknowledged as a fact. No one can question that the old order of things is what has run us "off the track," and that a new plan of things must be worked out. ...
