In the nearly two millennia since the story of Jesus Christ began to be circulated, millions of people have wondered, "Who is Jesus Christ?" Much ink has been spilled, and many thousands of books have been written about this grandest of gods and men, in the quest to portray the "real Jesus." Practically every personality type and special interest group has been able to find a reflection of itself in Jesus, and countless people have looked to him as their inspiration and champion. Many millions, in fact, are quite convinced that Christ is indeed the God of the universe who came to Earth in a human body 2,000 years ago. Still others have settled into a comfortable position that Jesus was a "nice guy" and a "great leader" or a "political rebel" who fought for the underdog. These individuals often believe that Jesus was simply a human being, not God, but that his enthusiastic followers added a series of fairytales to his biography after his death. A minority of others have looked at the story with a jaundiced eye and found little evidence to be convinced of either of these two perspectives. The life of Jesus Christ is principally drawn in four "gospels" or books found in the New Testament section of the Holy Bible. There were many other gospels, numbering around 50, written by a variety of people, but these four were deemed "canonical," or authorized, and placed into the Bible. Along with the canonical letters or epistles, these four gospels are asserted to have been the only truly inspired Christian texts. In other words, the faithful believe these books were written at the request of God Himself, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In the pursuit here to discover Jesus, I will confine my analysis mainly to these four books, the Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, as well as certain other biblical and Christian texts. The Gospel According to Matthew. The gospel of Matthew is traditionally placed at the beginning of the New Testament canon, but there have been many debates over the centuries as to which book was written first, with arguments for practically every order. It is generally agreed that Matthew is placed first because it was done so in the most ancient traditions, and because it presents a satisfactory synopsis of Christ's life. ...
Murdock D. Preface. As one of the main sources for the religion part of the first - ZEITGEIST film, which has been viewed evidently over 100 million times worldwide, I have spent the past several years defending this - Part 1 and bringing forth its sources into the light of day. I have written not only a number of articles and ebooks but also a nearly 600-page book, Christ in Egypt: The Horus-Jesus Connection, elucidating upon these sources, highlighting the very profound correspondences between Christianity and the ancient Egyptian religion. I have also done a number of videos and audio recordings on this subject as well. ...
Murdock D. Introduction. Around the world over the centuries, much has been written about religion, its meaning, its relevance and contribution to humanity. In the West particularly, sizable tomes have been composed speculating upon the nature and historical background of one of the main characters of Western religions, Jesus Christ. Many have tried to dig into the precious few clues as to Jesus's identity and come up with a biographical sketch that either bolsters faith or reveals a more human side of this godman to which we can all relate. Obviously, considering the time and energy spent on them, the subjects of Christianity and its legendary founder are very important to the Western mind and culture, and increasingly to the rest of the world as well. The Controversy. Despite all of this literature continuously being cranked out and the significance of the issue, in the public at large there remains a serious lack of formal and broad education regarding religion and mythology, and most individuals are highly uninformed in this area. Concerning the issue of Christianity, for example, the majority of people are taught in most schools and churches that Jesus Christ was an actual historical figure and that the only controversy regarding him is that some people accept him as the Son of God and the Messiah, while others do not. However, whereas this is the raging debate most evident in this field today, it is not the most important. Shocking as it may seem to the general populace, the most enduring and profound controversy in this subject is whether or not a person named Jesus Christ ever really existed. Although this debate may not be evident from publications readily found in popular bookstores, when one examines this issue closely, one will find a tremendous volume of literature that demonstrates, logically and intelligently, time and again that Jesus Christ is a mythological character along the same lines as the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Sumerian, Phoenician, Indian or other godmen, who are all presently accepted as myths rather than historical figures. Delving deeply into this large body of work, one uncovers evidence that the Jesus character is based upon much older myths and heroes from around the globe. One discovers that this story is not, therefore, a historical representation of a Jewish rebel carpenter who had physical incarnation in the Levant 2,000 years ago. In other words, it has been demonstrated continually for centuries that this character, Jesus Christ, was invented and did not depict a real person who was either the "son of God" or was "evemeristically" made into a superhuman by enthusiastic followers. ...
Murdock D M - The companion guide to Zeitgeisturn:md5:cc59154641d4d01ccce8a5fdd9fba3192018-02-28T14:49:00+00:002018-04-14T19:46:59+01:00balderMurdock D. Introduction. "For what is now called the Christian religion existed of old and was never absent from the beginning of the human race until Christ came in the flesh. Then true religion which already existed began to be called Christian." Saint Augustine, Retractiones (I, xiii). "The Religion proclaimed by him to All Nations was neither New nor Strange." Bishop Eusebius, The History of the Church (II, iv). "There can be no doubt that the oldest Egyptian writings contain some vestiges of primeval faith. Egyptians in very remote areas believed in the immortality of man, with reward or punishment in the future state. They believed in the existence of good and evil powers in this l i fe, and were not wi thout a sense of personal responsibility..." Rev. Dr. W.H. Rule, The Horus Myth and Its Relation to Christianity (66). Chockfull of controversial, nerve-jarring themes, in 2007 the hit viral movie phenomenon "ZEITGEIST" was zinging around the internet at break-neck speed, receiving upwards of a million views per month. Needless to say, these various controversial themes, focusing on religious, political and financial conspiracies aimed at the common people, have become the subject of a great deal of debate. In fact, Part 1, which deals with religious conspiracy, indicting Christianity in particular of being a remake of ancient pre-Christian religions and myths, has caused a tremendous amount of furor in many forums. Naturally, as one of the sources of the material in Part 1, my work too has received interest by those intrigued by the suggestion that important motifs found in our "modern" religions have been around a very long time and have been incorporated into these religions, rather than the latter constituting unique, "divine revelation." Over the centuries, in fact, it has been the contention of numerous scholars and researchers of comparative religion and mythology that one of the major influences on the Christian religion was that of ancient Egypt, as highlighted in ZEITGEIST. Because of this fact of ZEITGEIST emphasizing the Egyptian religion, in this Companion Guide ebook, I will deal almost exclusively with some of the evident parallels between the Egyptian and Christian myths and rituals. A fuller treatment of the other aspects of ZEITGEIST, Part 1, may be found in a forthcoming longer work on the subject. In the meantime, interested parties should consult my books The Christ Conspiracy : The Greatest Story Ever Sold and Suns of God: Krishna, Buddha and Christ Unveiled. Although we today may find the ancient Egyptian religion bizarre and amusing, with all its peculiarities, including gods and goddesses in the forms of all sorts of animals, the truth is that the Egyptians themselves took their faith very seriously, so much so that, as with religions of today, murder in its name was not unknown. One need only look to the story of notorious pharaoh Amenhotep, aka Akhenaten, for an example of how sincerely the Egyptians and their priesthoods upheld their religion. ...
Murdock D. The Pagan Origins of the Christian Mysteries. “The importance of the Hellenistic mysteries by which emergent Christianity was surrounded cannot be exaggerated. One writer calls them ‘the principal factor in the spiritual life of the ancient world,’ another, ‘the last word of the pagan religions,’ and such expressions are surely not too strong.” Dr. Hugo Rahner, Greek Myths and Christian Mystery. Unbeknownst to the masses, and despite the fervent objections by early Church fathers to "the mysteries," Christianity possesses its own mysteries. In reality, many of Christianity's most germane features were part of the Pagan mysteries, which the Christians turned inside out by making them public. Indeed, Christianity was "in its origin a secret society." ...
Murdock D. “The result of the Church’s encounter with the sun-cults of antiquity was nothing less than the dethronement of Helios.” Dr. Hugo Rahner, Greek Myths and Christian Mystery (93). “Doctrinal Christianity may have dealt the final blow to the divinity of the Moon, since the symbolism in which Christ’s divinity was clothed after his death came from the Sun. In the contemporary Hellenistic world, both the Greek Sun god Helios and the Persian and Roman Sun god Mithras portrayed the celestial drama of resurrection through the risen Sun, reborn from death every dawn and every midwinter at the winter solstice. As Mithras was called the Sol Invictus, so Christ was to be the new invincible Sun, whose birth was timed (four centuries after he died) to the winter solstice in the image of the reborn Sun - as was the birth of Mithras. Christ’s God was beyond Sun and Moon as the transcendent Creator of the natural world, but the Sun and Moon played a crucial role in the Christian imagination through the complementary figures of Christ and Mary...” Jules Cashford, “Sun and Moon in Christianity,” The Moon (164). In my books and articles, I present the evidence that many aspects of the gospel story about Jesus Christ, and of Christian tradition in general, represent motifs from older astrotheology and solar mythology, specifically reflecting legends and myths regarding the sun gods of antiquity. There remains much confusion concerning this subject, including erroneous claims that this equation of Jesus with the sun only started to be expressed during the 19th century. This contention that connecting Jesus to the sun constitutes a “modern” phenomenon is easily demonstrated to be false, through the study of ancient texts, including the Bible and works of the early Church fathers, as well as Christian traditions, rituals, architecture and artifacts. From a wide variety of sources, it is clear that associating, identifying and equating Christ with the sun began in ancient times and has continued abundantly over the many centuries since then. ...
Murdock D.
Preface. For the first time, I have collected together various written interviews in English given over the past several years. I have placed these articles in chronological order from the earliest to the latest. There is more biographical material in this ebook than in most of my writings, and some of it is repeated at certain points. Yet, there is also quite a bit of factual material about my favorite subjects, including religion, mythology, astrotheology, history, archaeoastronomy and languages, etc. It is interesting also to note the changes in the world since the earliest of these interviews took place. The commentaries at the beginning of each interview are not mine but those of the interviewers. Neither these comments nor the interviewers' questions necessarily reflect my views. Some of the text of both the questions and answers has been changed, as part of this update, to render it more comprehensible and accurate. Spelling and grammar have been cleaned up, and the articles are also edited for style. All highlighted quotes centered and bolded are mine; these are repeated within the text itself at the appropriate place. The Progressive Observer interview of 2004 leads the way and reflects a time when I only had two books published, The Christ Conspiracy and Suns of God. The interviewer's cautionary comments provide a good place to start. The TPO article was edited for publication on the interviewer's website, but I include here my complete responses. I remember Storm Fox as a young college student whose enthusiastic interview earned him an A grade. His interview was published on ParanoiaMagazine.com, and the intro was written by Joan D'Arc, whose own interview is included here as well. "Infidelis Maximus" is the pen name of a mysterious person who came and went, after publishing my interview on his popular blog, having subsequently found himself besieged by the sort of ranting ne'er-do-wells who regularly harangue me. Burton Wolfe wanted to interview me at great length—and then he got busy elsewhere for a couple of years. That's okay, as I've got more unfinished and unpublished work than I can shake a stick at! Much to my amusement, I discovered that his long list of some 30 questions was only a preliminary to the "real" interview, which we never did. Greek polytheism enthusiast Minas Papageorgiou ended up having an article about mythicism featuring me in a major Greek newspaper's weekly magazine, Phainomena, published during Christmas week, 2010. Joan D'Arc is a dear friend from years back who has published several articles of mine in her fascinating periodicals and books under the Paranoia title. Andrés Lomeña caught me at a very busy moment, right as I was completing my book Christ in Egypt. His interview was originally published in Spanish but is included here in English. David Miller aka "Shankbone" has photographed hordes of celebrities, providing some 4,000 images for Wikipedia over the years. He has also interviewed some very famous people, including Israeli president Shimon Perez, Wiki founder Jimmy Wales and controversial writer Salman Rushdie. ...
Murdock D. Preface. “Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently run universe, this guy would’ve been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago. And by the way, I say ‘this guy,’ because I firmly believe, looking at these results, that if there is a God, it has to be a man. No woman could or would ever fuck things up like this. So, if there is a God, I think most reasonable people might agree that he’s at least incompetent, and maybe, just maybe, doesn’t give a shit.” George Carlin, “Religion if Bullshit” The following articles and rants come from a series I wrote in the 1990s, during my early years online, when the wild worldwide web was a new and strange playground for free speech. A number of these essays represent responses to emails I received - some of them not so nice. As such, my replies at times may be deemed surly, to be sure, especially as concerns the essay, “Proof that God Doesn’t Exist,” as one example. I have nevertheless left it pretty much as is, just for your amusement, to serve as another, more “playful” aspect of my writing. It should be noted that an “Atheist Here to Destroy?” represents a full essay, completely different from the subsection by the same title in The Gospel According to Acharya S.. As an historical note, my essay “Religion is Mental Illness, God is a Psychopath” can be found pilfered in many places all over the net. Here I have updated it slightly. Because I largely focus on the Abrahamic religions, over the years I have been asked many times to write about Buddhism, so I include here “Is Buddhism All It’s Cracked Up to Be?,” an essay from about a decade ago, with various updates. I also discuss Buddhism in detail in my book Suns of God: Krishna, Buddha and Christ Unveiled,” as well as in my other books to a lesser extent. ...
Murdock D. The 2010 Astrotheology Calendar. By Acharya S/D.M. Murdock and N.W. Barker Thank you for your interest in the Astrotheology Calendar. The purpose of this calendar is to share with you a basic history of ancient concepts, practices and dates venerating the sun, moon, planets, stars and constellations that you may have never heard before or, at least, not from an astrotheological perspective. We hope to inspire an interest in archaeoastronomy, ancient history, mythology and astrotheology. The calendar used is the Gregorian, which is solar based, and with it we will introduce you to information relating to astrotheology in a light, easy-to-understand format with sources for further reading. Although they are often overlooked, calendars constitute one of the most important cultural artifacts of human creation. Not only do they order our lives, which is in itself an extremely important function that allows for life on Earth to proceed with regularity, but the study of the history of calendars also reveals very important developments in the field of comparative religion and mythology, as well as the predominantly astrotheological nature of many of humankind's faiths. ...
Murdock D. The disparaging comments regarding non-Jews are expurgated from various editions of the Talmud. They are, however, found in the Soncino English translation of 1935. (Some of these pages have been reproduced in The Plot Against Christianity.) Where they have been expunged, one can find an "o" indicating "oral tradition," which means they are still taught. Like it or not, Orthodox Judaism fervently teaches ultimate supremacy over "the nations," i.e., Gentiles, whom it pronounces as inferior creatures. Many Jews over the centuries, especially those who are "non-practicing," have exposed and apologized for these malicious comments and supremacist attitude. (See concentration camp survivor and Israeli citizen Prof. Israel Shahak's, Jewish History, Jewish Religion.) They are not to be held responsible; in many cases, they were brainwashed from birth and are appalled at the mentality. The mentality is, however, held by individuals in the ruling elite, religious and political. Almost none of our "Jewish" friends agree with this attitude, although some joke about it. Note that there are many more quotes of this nature within the Talmud, so numerous in fact that it is difficult to imagine more calumny being heaped upon "the nations." It is true that some of these quotes have been taken out of context. We are attempting here to find them and put them within their context. Also, a number of these contentious remarks are followed by mitigating commentary from another rabbi (such as the quote about heathens studying the Torah at Sanhedrin 59a). Some of these quotes are translated quite differently from version to version, apparently at times softened. According to Prof. Israel Shahak, the original Hebrew passages possess greater vitriol than do the translations. Because of the translation discrepancies, it is difficult to verify these quotes. The verses in dark blue are confirmed by us to be in the Soncino Talmud. We have removed some particularly incendiary remarks because they cannot easily be verified. Further, it should be noted that some of these texts, such as the Zohar, Aruch, Yalkut, Tosefta and Soferim, may not be contained within the Talmud proper but are referenced therein, as "commentaries" and "tractates" also considered "sacred texts." While the Soncino Talmud quotes are represented verbatim where possible, at least some of the statements purportedly from these other texts represent paraphrases. The text is frequently deliberately difficult to follow, in Hebrew as well, such that it needs to be simplified. (Such as concerns the use of terms for non-Jews/Gentiles: "Cutheans," "Samaritans," "Egyptians," "Canaanites," "Karaites" and "Minim," which refers to the "Judeo-Christian heretics," also considered the "Sadducees." "Heathens," of course, and "Goyim," are well-known terms used in the Talmud. "Goyim," referring to Gentiles, is said to mean "unclean.") It should be also kept in mind that much of the Talmud was orally taught and/or written down long before pogroms and persecution of Jews were common. Thus, the notion that these anti-Gentile statements are a reaction to such persecution is untrue. Indeed, it has been suggested that the persecution was in large part on account of such anti-Gentile sentiments and behavior. For a rebuttal or apology of these quotes, see below. ...
Murdock D. Preface. The liberation of the human mind has never been furthered by dunderheads; it has been furthered by gay fellows who heaved dead cats into sanctuaries and then went roistering down the highways of the world, proving to all men that doubt, after all, was safe¾that the god in the sanctuary was finite in his power and hence a fraud. One horse-laugh is worth ten thousand syllogisms. It is not only more effective; it is also vastly more intelligent. H.L. Mencken The search for the conspiratorial origins of the name of this book’s author takes a circuitous route. “Acharya” means “teacher,” but the title conjures an image of a little old man in India. Mahatma Gandhi, for instance, bestowed the title onto his spiritual heir, Acharya Vinoba Bhave, who began the Bhoodan land movement in India in the early 1950s. More strictly, the word means “preceptor,” the head-master or principal of a school. A student could further fine-tune that definition by discovering, only in some dictionaries, that “preceptory” includes reference to the Knights Templar, an order ostensibly founded in 1119 CE to protect Holy Land pilgrims during the Second Crusade until it was banned and went underground two centuries later. Today, Freemasonry continues to claim descent from this medieval brotherhood. None of this rumination suggests that Acharya S claims title as a preceptor or direct kinship to the Freemasons, although she has helped re-popularize an essay by Thomas Paine regarding Masonic sun-worship. Acharya’s preceptory resides in cyberspace, on the web at www.truthbeknown.com, on her discussion list, through her posts in such e-places as konformist.com and Steamshovel Press, of which I am the publisher, and through her non-profit Institute for Historical Accuracy. Acharya S is also not a kindly little old guru. Her writing reflects a wicked wit and the intelligence of a person who does not suffer fools gladly. Under the flashing head of Bob Dobbs on her website and the words “God is BORG” are essays/rants on Earth and the cosmos, the existence or nonexistence of “God,” the spiritual paucity of organized religion, as well as conspiracy and UFO/alien realities. “The believers/theists feel my views are intolerant,” she writes, “while the nonbelievers/atheists object to the mysticism and perceive me as creating new beliefs . . . While I do not wish to live in a world where everyone is deluded by blind belief, I also do not want to totally dismiss all imagination or color.” A certain contemporary, straight-talking style distinguishes the work of Acharya S, which is surprising in that her scholarship sets out to recover ancient understanding from the relatively modern corruption of Judeo-Christian culture. Her style and perception are reminiscent of the late novelist and satirist William S. Burroughs, and she no doubt agrees with this assessment of his: “Perhaps the most basic concept in my writing is a belief in the magical universe, a universe of many gods often in conflict. The paradox of an all-powerful, all-seeing God who nonetheless allows suffering, evil and death, does not arise.” Indeed, Acharya S likes to say, “There is no single giant male god in charge. There are six billion little gods all jockeying for position.” What is most interesting, perhaps, about Acharya S’s work is that, while a rabblerousing rebel, she has an impressive set of academic credentials. She belongs to one of the world’s most exclusive institutes for the study of ancient Greek civilization, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Greece. She has taught on Crete and worked on archaeological excavations in Corinth, site where legend holds Paul addressed the Corinthians, and in New England. She has also traveled extensively around Europe and has a “working knowledge” of Greek, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese and other languages. She has read Euripides, Plato and Homer in ancient Greek and Cicero in Latin, as well as Chaucer in Middle English, and has clearly sat down with the Bible – in English, as well as in the original Hebrew and Greek – long enough to understand it more than most clergy. So, as entertaining and edifying as is the dharma combat carried on by Acharya S via her expository cyberprose, this book, The Christ Conspiracy: The Greatest Story Ever Sold, reflects the scholarship from which her fiery perspective comes. Some readers may find different aspects of it familiar. For instance, her survey of the lack of evidence for the existence of the historical Jesus contains information that has become increasingly accepted even by Christian revisionist groups such as the Jesus Seminary. As inflammatory as that material remains in many circles, it serves only as the beginning for Acharya S. She takes hammer and tong to many other nonhistorical figures, fraudulent church scams and misrepresented history in a matter of fact way, with chapters containing mythological character cross-references and details of legends. She recovers astronomical and cosmological elements in biblical texts that are far older than the corrupted versions revered in churches. The thesis of her work, that Christianity was created artificially out of older religions to consolidate Roman state control over those religions, as well as various mystery schools and secret societies, is a wellspring of awareness for students of conspiracy. Acharya S also makes a clear case for the existence of an ancient global civilization. While some may wonder about her motives for creating such a monumental work that will no doubt shake up many people’s perceptions of reality, Acharya S told me in no uncertain terms that “one of the reasons for doing this work is that I spent the first decade of my life literally becoming ill at war, violence, death and man’s inhumanity to man and other creatures. Such vile behavior has all too often occurred because of religion and unfounded beliefs. The deception of the religion business is appalling, and it’s high time it is exposed.” Amen. Over a century ago, renowned British Egyptologist Sir Dr. E.A. Wallis Budge (1857-1934), a Keeper of the Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum, as weil as a confessed Christian, remarkcd that a study tracing the "influence of ancient Egyptian religious beliefs and mythology on Christianity" would "fill a comparatively large volume." Since Dr. Budge's time, for a variety of reasons, including the seemingly irreconcilable academie gap between historians and theologians, no one has taken up the call to produce such a volume - until now. ...
Murdock D. Shortly after completing my theological history education, l came upon the book The Christ Conspiracy, a sort of prequel to this book, Suns of God. By my last year in gradua te school, 1 had come to the uncomfortable conclusion that much of what 1 had been taught as fact was really tradition. The ideas considered as reality were hardly more than a long list of elaborate and chaotic beliefs about the world around us. These ideas and beliefs of modern religions were borrowed thousands of years ago from a host of sources, who themselves borrowed from even older sources. It was clear that there truly was nothing new under the sun. In this regard, it is imperative to ask how something so archaic and easily shawn to be erroneous still exists in a time of space shuttles, ten-dimensional universes, and light-speed computer chips. Perhaps there are many reasons, the first and most obvious being humanity's desire to understand. I have a little friend who believes in ghosts. His father died when he was only two years old, and this belief is the only way he can main tain a connection to his father. Of course, he is only five years old now, but I can sec how these beliefs, once instilled, are not easy to overcome. He explained that his father was a ghost who lived underground, as he had been to his father's grave and had seen this place for himself. Despite assurances that, in my educated experience, such things as ghosts were most certainly not real, my young friend simply nodded his head and told me 1 was wrong. He truly be!ieved in ghosts, although he did comment that vampires were unlikely, as were swamp monsters. Did someone tell him his father was now a ghost? Or, did the combination of television, ghost stories and the knowledge of his father's death simply add up to his belief? This type of circumstance is perhaps how many religious people come to profess their beliefs in gods and spirits. Sorne part of them needs to believe, and their limited knowledge of histoty and of older cultures, especially the earliest cultures, adds up to a belief in sorne great and powerful unseen forces. Today we live, for the most part, in an age of modern accomplishment. Disease is no longer the purvey of demons or bad astrology but viruses or bad genetics. Yet, despite ali our advancements as a species or, perhaps because of them-the need for the control of our minds seems to have reached a fever pitch. Even in this modem age, we are still faced with those who argue names and semantics at the "point of a sword." Wars are fought daily around the globe because of religions ideas-ideas based on nothing more, as Acharya's books show, than the mistranslated words or another culture, as well as the desperate need to raise "our" gods over those of our neighbors. In addition to presenting this troubling history in an easily followed narrative, Acharya goes a step further, explaining as only she can how a once-simplistic idea has been carried into our modern world with terrible and nearly unimaginable results. Unending horrors are committed as certain individuals, belîeving-and I cannat stress the word strongly enough, belieuing - that they are best able to ascertain an otherwise unknowable knowledge, hidden from all but the truest followers, depending on which deity they follow, aggressively demand to show the rest of us, atheist, agnostic and infidel alike, how to live. In the book you now hold in your hands, you will find a great many answers to the most fundamental questions of organized religion, how it has maintained its vice-like grip on both the uneducated and educated, as weil as how those people who profess "love" and "kindness" the most vociferously are often among the most dangerous. Just as my young friend needs to believe in ghosts to understand his world, so too do many otherwise intelligent citizens of our world need sorne mythology to give meaning to their lives. We must never underestimate the stakes the modern myth-spinners have in keeping their myths alive. Whether tied to a cultural identity, a matter of social and political control, or simply an ignorance of the natural world, sorne people who profess to know our hearts' desires in reality wish only for the chaos and oppression created by "their" histoty. Although we ourselves may be satisfied to live in this modern age, these individuals seem to prefer, in many instances, the age of our ancestors, when unreachable gods controlled the puppet strings of humanity. Altematively, perhaps, like my little friend, the more innocent among us have a psychological need, a desire unmet by other facets of !ife, that these myths fulfill. Naturally, this need does not usually include vampires, although judging from the "religious" fixation on blood, as depicted most graphically in the recent horror flick "The Passion of the Christ," perhaps it does.
