SAEMUND, son of Sigfus, the reputed collector of the poems bearing his name, which is sometimes also called the Elder, and the Poetic, Edda, was of a highly distinguished family, being descended in a direct line from King Harald Hildetonn. He was born at Oddi, his paternal dwelling in the south of Iceland, between the years 1054 and 1057, or about 50 years after the establislnnent by law of the Christian religion in that island; hence it is easy to imagine that many heathens, or baptized favourers of the old mythic songs of heathenism, may have lived in his days and imparted to him the lays of the times of old, which his unfettered mind induced him to hand down to posterity. ...
Thorpe Benjamin - Northern Mythology Volume 3urn:md5:5bddac3d5c27d5970cbc58abeb2c0f1b2013-02-19T23:03:00+00:002013-02-19T23:03:00+00:00balderThorpe BenjaminGermanyMythologyNetherlandsScandinavia

AMID the lofty Fjelds of Norway the gigantic Jutul has fixed his home, of whose fingers and feet traces may be seen in the hard stone, and whom fragments of rock and ponderons grave-stones serve for weapons ; in the lower ridges the wily Troll and the beautful Huldra have their dwelling ; in mounds and by lofty trees the countless swarms of Elves have their haunt, while beneath the earth the small but long-armed and skilful dwarfs excrcise their handicrafts. ...
Thorpe Benjamin - Northern Mythology Volume 1urn:md5:b993a6d13398b40b9ca325cdcc4ef1ea2013-02-19T22:54:00+00:002013-02-19T22:56:01+00:00balderThorpe BenjaminGermanyMythologyNetherlandsScandinavia

Northern literature, more particularly that branch of it which is connected with the early times and antiquities of Scandinavia and the north of Germany, having of late become an object of increasing interest in many parts of Europe, the idea seemed to me not unreasonable that a work, comprehensive yet not too voluminous, exhibiting the ancient mythology and principal mythologie traditions of those countries, might be found both useful and entertaining not only to the lover of Northem lore at home and to the English traveller over those interesting lands, but also to the English antiquary, on account of the intimate connection subsisting between the heathenism of the Germanic nations of the Continent and those of his own Saxon forefathers, manifest traces of which are to be found in the works of our earliest chroniclers and poets. lt was under this impression that the present work was undertaken. ...
