Introduction. WE expect that the Jews will try to boycott "The American Jew," using the same peculiar tactics as in the case of "The Original Mr. Jacobs," They will appoint committees to visit book-dealers, urging them not to handle the book; they will buy up and destroy all copies found exposed for sale ; they will bribe, threaten, plead, and try in every possible way to ·interfere with its sale ; they will circulate reports that the book has been " called in," and will spread many other lies, - lies that the Jew knows so well how to disseminate. But all their efforts toward stopping the sale of "The Original Mr. Jacobs" have been unavailing, for in less than three months this book has achieved a wide-spread circulation. It is, at the present writing, in its twentieth edition, and its sale does not show' any sign of abatement. We have been requested by many prominent men in literary, financial, and commercial circles, to establish a monthly publication, to be called "The Anti-Semite." We have been assured of ample support in this venture. There is certainly enough of patriotism among the masses of the American people to maintain such a publication ; and there is, unquestionably, a wide-spread desire to check the diabolical methods of the Jews, - these parasites of the human race. The periodical we propose to establish, will give a faithful account of the deceits, crimes, and fraudulent transactions of the Jew, in all channels of business. It will be published monthly, at one dollar per year. Efficient correspondents throughout the United States will watch the Jew, and will keep us informed of all his deeds, or rather, misdeeds, which will be fearlessly. recorded in "The Anti-Semite." Efforts will not be spared in urging the passage of laws that will afford some protection to the commercial community, and to society in general, from the Jew. Every business-man should support " The Anti-Semite; " for this publication will expose dishonesty, and watch over the interests of the business community. Intended subscribers will please remit their subscription to " The Miuerva Publishing Company, 10 West 23d Street, New-York City," for which a receipt will be duly forwarded. Arrangements are now being made to have the first number appear as soon as possible. Preface. This book deals with facts, and the critic will be forced to acknowledge that the truth, and nothing but the truth, is revealed in every page. This exposé is not half as severe as the subject treated of demands. Still, enough is told to bring to light the hidden venom and baneful influence of a race deemed by many "inoffensive." To La France Juive of Edward Drumont, a duodecimo in two volumes, containing together more than one thousand pages, the author gratefully acknowledges his obligations for assistance derived in the preparation of this book. La France Juive, however, is not a safe guide for the average reader. Every statement of Drumont has been carefully analyzed, examined, and fully verified before it was accepted by the author for publication in this volume. Although Drumont's books have found readers by the thousand, and his La France Juive, in a short space of time, ran through one hundred and twenty-six editions, it must be confessed that the French writer is too often carried away by his prejudices, while his attacks on Americans, and on Free-Masons, and on Protestantism are not only unwarranted, but puerile and spiteful in the extreme. The author again asserts that everything brought forward in this book, however startling it may seem, is nevertheless a fact. His whole aim has been to present the truth in all matters pertaining to this malignant and diabolical race, that has obtained so strong a foothold in our country. Printed 1888 Minerva Publishing Co. Preface. Repeated requests from readers of my" History of Greece " for a book on the Homeric times, which, as a matter of necessity, were briefly treated in the history, have induced me to undertake the present work. There is, perhaps, no page in the whole history of the Hellenic race so interesting and instructive as the Homeric age. An irresistible charm has always drawn me to that period. When we consider that centuries before Christ, when the rest of the world was steeped in barbarism, the Hellenic people enjoyed a civilization in many respects unsurpassed to this day, thatthey transported large armies across the sea, that they first of all founded institutions which have elevated mankind, that they produced a poet who alone is sufficient to glorify a nation, we may well feel an .interest in investigating more fully such an age. In the preparation of the present volume, I have conscientiously examined nearly every book -Greek, French, German, or English-written on Homer. But my great teacher and guide has been Homer himself, and I have not hesitated to base my judgment upon the poems, as constituting the highest authority. This work is, of course, not intended for specialists. My aim has been to reach that vast class of intelligent readers who have neither time nor inclination to search the voluminous books which thus far have appeared on the Homeric age, and which, as a general thing, are written in too heavy and diffuse a style. I have taken care to tell the story as simply as possible, and to avoid all terms which would be unintelligible to the average reader. The entire Homeric life, from the birth of the hero to his death, is unfolded in a single volume of less than three hundred pages. Scholars are wont to place the Germans at the head of all commentators or expositors of Homer and the Homeric age. This idolatry of everything that springs on German soil is so blind that the most absurd statement that might be made by one of the savants of Göttingen or of Berlin becomes at once a sort of axiom, and alas for him who shall dare to offer a contrary opinion ! I am far from wishing to belittle the almost Herculean labors of the Germans in the field of Grecian literature. Their patience, research, and investigation are much to be admired. But I protest most emphatically against those who seek to ridicule American scholarship, trammel American investigation in the field of classical literature, and scoff at everything that may be antagonistic to Teutonic ideas. Of all the books that have yet appeared on Homer, the best, in my opinion, has been written by a modem Greek, Mr. Kleon R. Rangabe. His work, " 'O KAO' OMHPON OIKIAKOZ BIOZ," has already rendered the name of the author immortal; and not only do I acknowledge my obligations to the work of Mr. Rangab6, but I frankly confess that during the preparation of the present work the "KAOOMHPON OIKIAKOZ BIOZ" has never left my side (see note at the end of the book). I have used Bryant's translation-the prince of the translators of Homer-in quoting passages from the poet. T. T. TIMAYENIS. Preface. My purpose in this work, undertaken at the request of my esteemed friend Dr. J. H. Vincent, has been to write a history of Greece based as far as possible on the testimony of authorities contemporary with the events narrated. While I cheerfully acknowledge my obligations to Gibbon and Grote-the most eminent of modern historians - a careful study of the Greek writers has led me to differ from them on many important matters. ...
Timayenis Telemachus Thomas - A history of Greece from the earliest times to the present Volume 2urn:md5:7b4d756dc2364bde4cb20f46dda40d332013-08-29T11:59:00+01:002013-08-29T12:57:40+01:00balderTimayenis Telemachus ThomasGreece

We have already alluded to the character and life of the Breotians and Thebans. The Thebans were certainly not among the noblest tribes in Hellas: They possessed neither the advantages which the Athenians derived from their matchless intelligence, nor those which the Spartans obtained through their wonderful political and military organization. The very sentiment of Hellenic autonomy was for a long time weak among the Thebans. They had openly united with Xerxes and Mardonius during the invasion of the Persians. But the Thebans were brave soldiers, and possessed souls, if not always noble, yet ever resolute ; bodies, if not prepossessing, yet athletic and well prepared, by exercise and thorough drill from early childhood, for every military duty. The Thebans in the fifth century B. c. repeatedly obtained the honor of having defeated the Athenian hoplites, then in their glory. ...
