Preface. The republishing of the papers on the so-called Prophecies of St. Malachy which I contributed last year to the Ulsler-Examiner, has been undertaken at the request of my venerated bishop and of a number of friends. The papers, as they first appeared, had many drawbacks. In the beginning I entered rather enthusiastically into the views of a French ecclesiastic who wrote in defence of the Prophecies; then, as I went on with my work, I grew more cautious, and the more I was anxious to obtain grounds of certainty, the more my doubts increased. ...
