By her stream of books and articles over the last thirty years, Bat Ye’or, an independent scholar not connected with any ideological or political group nor identified with any partisan organization, has made a singular and challenging contribution to the discussion of the historic and present role of Islam in politics and society in Europe and elsewhere. Throughout that long literary career she has written on various subjects, but most important have been the works on the treatment of non-Muslims, or “dhimmis,” in countries under Islamic rule, and on the nature and impact of that Islamic rule.
